Paul Henderson

Main Functions: Paul’s team is responsible for the major corporate reporting for Queensland Rail. Paul’s is responsible for managing and documenting the processes Queensland Rail uses to create the reports, including the metrics and commentary that go into them.

Paul's most exciting experience since joining Queensland Rail: "I have worked on seven major projects and initiatives since I joined Queensland Rail, but the most exciting was when I was responsible for ensuring our business was ready to separate over 70 IT systems as a results of the separation of Queensland Rail and QR National. I am also proud of my success at the inaugural Graduate Showcase in my first year as a grad, where my team presented a successful business case and I led my team to victory.”

Aaron Lau
Studied: Queensland University of Technology Aaron Lau
Degree: Bachelor of Civil Engineering
Current Position Title Graduate Civil Engineer
Area:

Civil and Structures Engineering team

Main Functions: Aaron’s team looks after the civil and structural design aspects of projects throughout Queensland Rail including providing advice to maintenance teams. Aaron is involved in the detailed design and checks, site investigations and contract admin.
What Aaron enjoys about working for Queensland Rail: “I like the work/life balance that the company has to offer, as well as working in a great team environment and the employee benefits.”
Aaron's most exciting experience since joining Queensland Rail: “I have really enjoyed working in a multidiscipline team. I find this helps with my professional development and communication skills. Queensland Rail also offers a lot of training courses which have helped me to develop and refine my skills.”
Why Aaron thinks you should join Queensland Rail as a Grad: “By joining as a Grad, you will get to see first hand the various business locations/operations throughout Queensland. This gives you a greater understanding of the company and the services Queensland Rail provides. In addition to that, if you join as an engineering grad like I did, you may have the chance to do rotations to different areas of the business, giving you the opportunity to get a feel for what really interests you!”


Liam Murphy

Current Position Title Civil Engineer
Area:

Regional Asset Strategy Team

Main Functions: Liam works within his team on provide engineering assistance to the regional area, managing future demands through forecasting and investigating new and emerging technologies to provide the best safety efficiency standards.
What Liam enjoys about working for Queensland Rail: “Everyone is more than willing to help each other out and share their knowledge also the different challenges I get faced with, no week is the same as the week before ”.
Liam's most exciting experience since joining Queensland Rail: “One of the most unforgettable experiences I’ve had since I began working at Queensland Rail was the floods in Northern QLD in 2009. I had just started my rotation at Townsville and I saw first hand the impact natural disasters can have to our infrastructure. I also saw how well our company handled this and how quickly we were able to get back to business as usual through working together.”
Why Liam thinks you should join Queensland Rail as a Grad: “I think Queensland Rail will expose you to a wide variety of work. If you are an engineer, like I am, you’ll find that through all the opportunities and projects available, you’ll become a very well rounded engineer.”


Amy Kittel

Current Position Title Human Resources Graduate
Area:

Recruitment Centre (1st of 3 rotations across the HR business)

Main Functions: People are at the heart of Queensland Rail .The recruitment centre handles everything related to the recruitment and selection of talent for the Queensland Rail workforce.
What Amy enjoys about working for Queensland Rail: “Every day is different and there are always plenty of challenges to take on. I also really enjoy that I have the opportunity to liaise with people from different parts of the business as well as externally.”
Amy's most exciting experience since joining Queensland Rail: “Although I’m only a new Grad, I’ve already had many opportunities to be involved in challenging and rewarding projects. I find the work to be meaningful and that which has a positive impact on the business. This makes me feel like my work is valuable and I’m making a real contribution.”

Ryan McKone

Main Functions: Ryan’s role involves an oversight of projects and contracts which are greater than $10 Million. Ryan also works on ensuring Queensland Rail achieves the best value for money on its projects and contracts, conducting in-depth analysis before a project or contract is approved.
What Ryan enjoys about working for Queensland Rail: “I enjoy the exposure across various business groups that my role encompasses. I am encouraged to work in challenging environments and I’m always learning something new. Finally my team is made up of highly skilled professionals who are also great to work with.”
Ryan's most exciting experience since joining Queensland Rail: “I have been involved with many projects and been given tremendous opportunity at Queensland Rail. Some of the most exciting experiences have been working in the 'sale of QR National project team', travelling to various locations to view business operations first-hand, and presenting a team business improvement idea to the CEO.”

Chun Man Tsui
Studied: University of Queensland Chun Man Tsui
Degree: Bachelor of Mechanical & Space Engineering, Master of Technology Management
Current Position Title Mechanical Engineer
Area:

Passenger Rollingstock Engineering

Main Functions: Chun Man’s division is responsible for all areas of engineering associated with the operation of passenger rollingstock for Queensland Rail. Chun Man works on the management of engineering projects from the design, development of technical specifications and standards, procurement, testing and commissioning of new passenger rollingstock.
What Chun Man enjoys about working for Queensland Rail: “I enjoy the fact that the work I do has a real and positive impact on the experience of tens of thousands of passengers who ride our trains every day. I like that there is never a shortage of challenging and diverse work, and that both my peers and managers are very supportive of my career thus far."
Chun Man's most exciting experience since joining Queensland Rail: “I had the extremely rare opportunity to work in a team to compile a tender bid for an external consultation service for the South Australia Government in their railcar procurement project. The long hours were worth it due to the tremendous experiences I gained and the recognition and award we have received from our GM.”

Alvin Vun

Passenger Rollingstock Engineering

Main Functions: Alvin’s area provides engineering solutions and support to the City network and Travel network fleet within Queensland Rail.
What Alvin enjoys about working for Queensland Rail: “I enjoy the day-to-day challenge of working on various projects. I find the experience I gain from this is invaluable to my engineering career. Queensland rail also offers flexible working arrangements and offers support for the well being of all employees."
Alvin's most exciting experience since joining Queensland Rail: “Working on the City network communications and CCTV Upgrade project was a great experience. This project also was a part of the requirement to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA). I also really enjoyed working on the On-Board Wireless Trial project which provided free internet to customers on-board via a Wi-Fi connection."
Why Alvin thinks you should join Queensland Rail as a Grad: “Engineering graduates can experience working in various environments: office, workshops and in the field. There are also opportunities to be involved in various projects that will develop their technical and interpersonal skills.”


Fiona Currie
Studied: University of Queensland Fiona Currie
Degree: Bachelor of Environmental Management- Sustainable Development
Current Position Title General Manager Environment
Area:

Safety and Environment- Corporate and Strategy Services

Main Functions:

As the GM, Fiona reports to the Chief Safety and Environment Officer. Fiona’s key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the Queensland Rail Environment team;
  • Shaping and influencing the organisational culture;
  • Representing Queensland Rail in dealings with relevant external stakeholders;
  • Establishing a positive profile for environmental management within the Queensland Rail business through the development of effective relationships; and
  • Providing strategic and operational advice to the Policy Committee, senior management and the Queensland Rail business on environmental risk, compliance and sustainability matters
What Fiona enjoys about working for Queensland Rail: “Throughout my Queensland Rail career, I have worked extensively with trades men and women in workshops and on the track, with officers and management within an office environment; and with external regulatory bodies and community groups within the public arena.  This diversity in workplaces, combined with the complexity of the ‘Environment’ discipline area, has made for an exciting and challenging career."
Fiona's most exciting experience since joining Queensland Rail:

“Since very early in my career, I have consistently been provided with opportunities to act in higher level positions and consequently, progressively develop and prepare for my subsequent roles. Queensland Rail has also supported my aspiration to become a successful leader/manager through:

  • Internal Leadership Training: ‘Leading Others’ and “Leading in QR” Courses;
  • External Management Training: ‘Transitional Management’ and ‘Financial Acumen’ Courses; and
  • Acquisition of a mentor: General Manager Safety and Environment QRP provided me with one-on-one coaching and support for approximately two years.
Why Fiona thinks you should join Queensland Rail as a Grad:

“I am a huge advocate for staff development, mentoring, succession planning and graduate placement programs which I believe is reflective of the fantastic opportunities I have been provided with throughout my Queensland Rail career.

Coming into Queensland Rail I was an undergraduate with loads of enthusiasm but little business acumen and a reasonably narrow view of environmental management within the real world. The opportunity to work in this diverse business, surrounded by staff willing to share their knowledge, experience and skills provided me an amazing classroom to develop my technical skills and broaden my business understanding.”
