Queensland Rail has a very proud and rich history, evolving from a fledgling rail business in 1865 to become Australia’s largest rail and transport enterprise, and recognised across the globe for its many achievements.
For the past 145 years, we have played a major role in the Queensland’s economy, providing the backbone for economic, social and regional development and growth across the State.
Our business has been instrumental in opening up new markets, supporting the development and growth of Queensland’s resource sectors and helping to develop and link communities throughout the State.
In 2009, the State Premier of Queensland, Anna Bligh, announced the privatisation of QR’s Coal, Freight, Network and Services businesses. These businesses have been brought together to create QR National.
The new QR National and Queensland Rail businesses officially separated on July 1 2010, marking the beginning of significant growth and opportunity for the new Queensland Rail. Now a predominately travel and freight network provider, Queensland Rail has the opportunity to focus on providing safety and customer service excellence.
