Public Place Recycling

Public Place Recycling was launched at Roma St, Central, and Fortitude Valley Stations on 17 March 2010. Dual bin enclosures allow for the collection of recyclable and general waste separately. This initiative will be rolled out across more than 40 Citytrain stations and will potentially divert up to 570 tonnes of waste from landfill.

The enclosures were constructed using steel and eWood - a fully recycled product made from recycled toner cartridges. eWood is manufactured by Close-the-Loop and is used by Green Echo in the design of numerous products, including the dual bin enclosures.  Furthermore, the enclosures are locally made by HELP Enterprises, a community-based, not-for-profit organisation which assists in the support of people with disabilities.

Energy Reduction Campaign: Lighting upgrades and trials
Lighting on the platforms at Roma Street station was recently automated through the installation of timers.  This initiative resulted in a reduction in energy consumption of 700-1000 kwh/day.  The reduction of energy consumption will have both financial and environmental impacts upon Queensland Rail. Not only has the cost associated with energy for the station been reduced, but the carbon footprint of the station has also diminished which is a positive step towards developing a sustainable station.

Queensland Rail has installed energy efficient lighting at some its stations as part of their campaign to reduce energy consumption. LED lights have been installed at Wynnum, Windsor, and Bethania stations. In addition, motion sensors have been installed at Bethania to further enhance the lighting efficiency. Queensland Rail is currently collecting data to measure the progress of this initiative. Following the success of this program, Queensland Rail expects to extend this program to other stations.

Sustainability and Community Involvement

One of Queensland Rail’s train maintenance depots, The Mayne Rail Complex, has been involved in a Government run sustainability program, ecoBiz. This program encourages businesses to examine their resource consumption and look for ways to reduce it. More than twenty site staff have taken part in the program which has resulted in fantastic initiatives such as the installation of rainwater tanks, usage of compost bins, and the launch of an energy awareness campaign.

Queensland Rail, in conjunction with Australia Zoo, has been actively supportive of The Aussie Recycling Program, a program aimed at recycling mobile phones. Queensland Rail’s staff have become involved in the program by using prepaid postal bags to send off their old mobile phones to a central collection point. Furthermore, QR Passenger are planning to roll out the campaign at its stations by providing the postal bags at its’ stations. This will allow passengers to also easily recycle their old mobile phones, and in doing so, help protect the environment.
