Re-sleepering project

Overview

The aim of the Re-sleepering project was to increase the reliability and service life of the track assets throughout our Citytrain network, while minimising future maintenance requirements.

The project involved eliminating all existing timber and steel sleepers and replacing them with new low profile concrete sleepers, as well as eliminating all existing mechanical rail joints to create continuous welded rail.

The upgraded track structure of low profile concrete sleepers and continuous welded rail is stronger, more reliable, has a longer service life and is significantly less maintenance intensive than existing timber/steel sleeper track with mechanical rail joints.

This project completed in June 2016 and has resulted in a more reliable service for customers, a reduction in required maintenance shutdowns in the future and a reduction in future operating costs.
