Travelling with Children 

Infants (children under 4 years) who sit on an adult’s lap and do not occupy a seat, travel for free. A maximum of one (1) Infant may share a seat with a person 4 years and over free of charge. Should the infant occupy a seat, the applicable child fare is to be charged.

A child aged 11 years or under will not be permitted to travel unaccompanied on Queensland Rail Travel services.  They must be accompanied by a parent/guardian (at least 16 years of age) responsible for the care of the child.  In this case the word "accompanied" means they must be booked in the immediate vicinity of one another.

Children aged 12 years and over are permitted to travel unaccompanied on Queensland Rail Travel services. Parents/guardians are to be advised that Queensland Rail staff cannot supervise or provide extra attention to unaccompanied children outside of their normal duty of care. All train services offer a range of food and drinks suitable for children in the club car or lounge car.

Queensland Rail staff will heat bottles in a jug of hot water for the customer. Bottles cannot be heated in microwave ovens.

Collapsible baby carriages, child restraint car seats and baby safety capsules can be accepted as part of a customer’s luggage allowance as checked in luggage or can be brought onboard and stored in the luggage racks provided.

Rail is the perfect way to relax and unwind while your children have fun exploring and enjoying Queensland Rail's onboard entertainment.

• Rockhampton and Bundaberg Tilt Train services have a dedicated audio entertainment channel KO! (Kids Only) for children
• The Cairns Tilt Train service has a dedicated visual entertainment channel KO! (Kids Only) offering movies and ABC programs.
• The Cairns Tilt Train provides power points at every second seat for laptops or game consoles. The Rockhampton and Bundaberg Tilt Services have power points at every second seat in Business Class only.
• A selection of G and PG rated movies can be viewed in the club car or lounge car of most services at various times during the trip
• All Tilt Train services and most other services provide baby change facilities in the toilets at the end of the carriage. Please enquire for other train services.
• Kid’s activity packs are available for purchase through the club car on most services

To keep your child/ren occupied or to make them feel at home, you might like to consider packing a few little things in their carry on luggage for the journey. Some suggestions are:

• Their favourite toy (this can calm them and help them sleep during the journey)
• Pencils and colouring-in books
• Story books
• Travel games
• Portable DVD player with head phones
• The maximum size for unchecked luggage items is 23cm x 34cm x 48cm per item and must fit under the seat or in the overhead luggage racks.
