Luggage

It's important to plan when it comes to luggage. Here are some helpful tips for your journey:

  • Your luggage should consist of a suitcase, backpack or other travel bag
  • Valuable items such as passports, medicines, laptop computers, cameras, jewellery and fragile or perishable items must be carried onboard as cabin baggage
  • You may bring a total of up to three items of luggage, and of those 3 items you may check-in up to 2
  • It is recommended that you keep cash, credit cards and other items of value with them at all times
  • Your luggage should not obstruct aisles or doorways and identification tags should be fixed to all items, including hand luggage

Please note: If you are travelling with another transport carrier, luggage requirements and allowances may vary. Please check with your consultant or the carrier for more information.

Luggage Check-In

Luggage check-in facilities open one hour prior to departure at attended stations, and close 30 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time. At unattended stations onboard staff will assist with checking luggage upon the train’s arrival.

Checked Luggage

Your checked luggage allowance is up to two (2) items of luggage per person, to a maximum of 20kg and 180 linear* centimetres. Liability for loss or damage of checked luggage is limited to $200.

* length by width by depth added together

The following luggage items are accepted on Queensland Rail Travel services as either checked or unchecked luggage:

  • Suitcases, backpacks, travel bags with a maximum weight of 20kg (40 pounds) and 180 linear centimetres.

  • Child restraint car seats
  • Collapsible baby carriages
  • Baby safety capsules
  • Collapsible cots in boxes or carry bag.
  • Small eskies which contain food for personal consumption during the train journey. Maximum size up to 10 Litres capacity depending on the dimensions. Needs to be of a size so it can be stored on the floor in front of the customers’ seat, not in the luggage racks. Eskies must not contain dry ice as this is classified as a dangerous good.  See  Dangerous Goods for information on dangerous goods.
  • Small tents
  • Wheelchairs & mobility devices – depending on their dimensions.
  • Limited sporting equipment ( see section Sporting Equipment Accepted)

All other items including bicycles, surfboards and golf bags are carried subject to available storage space onboard services, and may incur an additional fee. Please check with your consultant or the carrier for more information.

Carry On Luggage

Should a customer not wish to check luggage through for carriage in the baggage car, they may carry luggage onto the Queensland Rail Travel service as unchecked luggage.

Unchecked luggage is carried at the owner's risk and Queensland Rail Travel does not accept responsibility or liability for luggage or any other item or possession accompanying the customer placed in racks, shelves or other storage areas, on the floor, or carried or placed on the train.

  • Customers can bring up to a maximum of three (3) items of carry on luggage onboard provided they don’t have any checked in luggage. The total free luggage allowance remains at three (3) items.
  • Each item of luggage should only be up to  20kg per item in weight (15kg for candy striped bags)
  • The maximum size of unchecked luggage items to fit under the seat or in the overhead luggage racks should be 23cm x 34cm x 48cm per item.
  • Carry on luggage must be placed under a seat, in a sleeping berth or in the luggage racks provided overhead or at the end of the carriage.
  • Items unable to fit under a customer’s seat or sleeping berth, or in a luggage rack or shelf, will not be accepted.
  • Carry on luggage is carried at the owner’s risk.
  • The amount of unchecked luggage that may be carried in a sleeping berth compartment is the same luggage allowance regardless if the compartment is occupied by a single group (e.g. a family). The cabin must be able to be safely accessed by the customers and staff.

Luggage Items Not Accepted

The following items are not accepted as suitable containers for customer’s luggage, and will not be accepted as luggage by Queensland Rail Travel:

  • Boxes ( except those containing bicycles or collapsible cots)
  • Garbage bags
  • Large eskies ( over 10 litres capacity)
  • Hessian bags

Sporting Equipment Accepted

The following items of sporting equipment will be accepted as checked luggage on Queensland Rail Travel services that have baggage cars (i.e. Cairns Tilt Train, The Sunlander, Spirit of the Outback, The Westlander and The Inlander).

Surfboards and boogie boards: To a maximum size of 200cm in length and are subject to available storage space on the selected service. Surfboards and boogie boards must be presented to the check luggage area in a surfboard or boogie board bag. A reservation must be made and held for each item and a fee of $12.50 per item is payable at the time of ticketing. Customers are limited to one surfboard or boogie board each per booking.

Note: Surfboards or boogie boards are not accepted on any Bundaberg or Rockhampton Tilt Trains due to limited luggage space.

Bicycles: Bicycles are accepted on all services with separate baggage cars and also on the Bundaberg Tilt Train and Rockhampton Tilt train (Rockhampton Tilt Train Ex Brisbane 5pm Friday and Sundays only). One bicycle per customer can be booked upon payment of $12.50 at the time of ticketing.

The above items are not included in the checked/unchecked customer luggage allowance.

Presentation of Bicycles: Bicycles can be presented by the customer in one of two ways:

  • Without a bicycle box or bag: The handle bars must be turned and tightened into place parallel to the bicycle frame to reduce the width of the bicycle. The pedals must be removed to further reduce the size and decrease the risk of a trip hazard. It is the responsibility of the customer to supply their own tools to disassemble their bicycle prior to Queensland Rail staff accepting it. Any saddle bags or baskets are to be removed.
  • Contained in a bicycle box or bag:  Designed to protect the bicycle.
In both cases, the bicycle (including containers) needs to be less than 20 kg in weight to be accepted by Queensland Rail staff. If it is over 20 kg, then the bicycle cannot be accepted.

At attended stations where check in facilities are available, customers must arrive in time to allow for the presentation of the above sporting equipment to Queensland Rail staff prior to the closing time of check in facilities 30 minutes before departure.

At unattended stations, onboard staff will assist with checking in the sporting equipment upon arrival of the service so long as the sporting item is ready for loading as mentioned above.

Golf Clubs: are accepted as an item of checked luggage if not larger than 25 cm (10 inches) in diameter and have a zippered hood in place. A reservation must be made for golf clubs on all Tilt Train services due to the limited storage space. Electric/motorised or push golf buggies will not be accepted. Fees may apply.

Other sporting equipment:  Applications can be made by contacting Queensland Rail via the customer contact centre or by visiting a Queensland Rail Travel centre.
