Queensland Rail’s Railsmart program aims to positively influence people’s attitude and behaviour on and around trains, tracks and rail property, and encourage community members to take responsibility for their own safety and that of others.
Queensland Rail through its ongoing community commitment offers school and community visits across Queensland, where our Education Unit deliver a proactive message of safety at or near railway lines.
In 2008/09 the Community Education Team (including Railsmart presentations and Events) delivered:
- Around 500 education session and events presenting to 136 205 people throughout the state
- A significant achievement in February 2009 when our 1 millionth student participated in our Safety educational program
- Visited schools and community groups between Mount Isa; and Townsville for the first time as part of the regional Railsmart program.
- The rail safety message with the launch of our global best practice rail safety education website railsmart.com.au
Level crossings
Queensland Rail has released shocking new CCTV footage to highlight the deplorable behaviour which is occurring nearly every day across our network.
Last year Queensland Rail recorded 472 near misses at level crossings, including 253 involving pedestrians or cyclists.
Enough is enough - these terrifying examples demonstrate how close some pedestrians have come to serious injury or death.
Before you take a risk around level crossings or railway lines, take the time to think, what would you miss?

Suncorp Safer Roads
Queensland Rail has teamed up with Suncorp in their Must have safer Queensland roads campaign to provide Queenslanders with tips to help them stay safe at level crossings. Look out for Suncorp's Safer Roads Ambassador, Craig Lowndes, providing the following tips on safe driving around level crossings:
- Never queue across train tracks. If a train comes, you’ll be stuck with nowhere to go
- Always pay attention to the signs and signals, and never enter a crossing if the red lights are flashing
- If there are no signals, treat the crossing like a junction. Slow down, have a good look around before proceeding.
