Transit Officers
Queensland Rail has teams of Transit Officers operating across the City network.
The role of the Transit Officer is to provide quality customer service, by assisting with:
- Crowd control during special events
- Assist passengers during planned and unplanned service disruptions
- Provide a physical presence on the network to enhance safety and security
- Closely monitor passenger behaviour
- Manage fare evasions
- Work in conjunction with Railway Squad Police.
Queensland Rail Transit Officers are level three authorised officers. Under the Transport Operations (Passenger Transport) Act 1994, they have the power to issue on-the-spot fines for ticketing and behavioural offences on railway property.
For more information on fines and offences please see conditions of travel.
Private Security Officers
Private security officers are present on approximately 40% of timetabled Queensland Rail City network services leaving Central Station after 6pm from Sunday to Thursday. These services are identified as Guardian Trains (new window) within the rail line timetables.
Under normal operating conditions, private security officers patrol all timetabled Friday and Saturday night services leaving Central Station after 7pm, and Saturday and Sunday morning NightLink services from Central station.
The private security officers' role is to deter crime and inappropriate behaviour on Queensland Rail City network services and at stations. Private security guards provide appropriate assistance in the event of a security incident on a train or station and are recognisable through their blue shirts and navy pants.
In addition to trains, teams of private security officers with muzzled dogs patrol selected stations and car parks across the City network in order to provide a visible, flexible security presence on the network.
Queensland Rail Police Service Railway Squad
Queensland Rail and the Queensland Police Service (QPS) have enjoyed a working relationship for many years. Our City network encompasses local police regions, with police attending incidents across the network.
Queensland Rail's formal partnership with QPS represents a strategic alliance designed to manage both real and perceived levels of crime and antisocial behaviour across the Queensland Rail network.
Today, the QPS Railway Squad consists of 64 sworn officers who proactively work to reduce risk and increase safety for customers and staff at stations and on board trains. The QPS Railway Squad officers achieve this through:
- Uniformed and plain-clothes patrols of stations and onboard trains
- Responding and investigating incidents on the network
- Working collaboratively with Queensland Rail, other agencies and the community to develop and enact crime prevention strategies
QPS Railway Squad officers are specifically trained to work in a rail environment. They are here to ensure the safety and security of commuters, Queensland Rail staff and Queensland Rail property. Railway Squad officers patrol trains, railway stations and car parks.
Queensland Rail Train Guards and Station Staff
Queensland Rail’s operational staff include drivers, train guards and station staff. In particular, guards and station staff have an important role to play in the provision of an identifiable uniformed presence and customer service.
Feel free to approach station staff or train guards with any queries or concerns you may have whilst on stations or trains. Train guards are to be found at the end of the third carriage on three car units, and at the front of the fourth carriage on six car units.
