Freight train derailment west of Goondiwindi

24/05/2024

At approximately 1.30pm on Thursday, 23 May, a loaded Watco grain train collided with a truck at the Gooray level crossing, located between Toobeah and Goondiwindi on the South West rail line.

The train consisted of approximately two locomotives and 40 loaded grain wagons, 12 of which have derailed with some on their side.

At the time of the incident, it is understood there were two train drivers onboard and one driver in the truck.

Queensland Emergency services arrived onsite shortly after the incident occurred.

All drivers were taken to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

An investigation into the accident is underway.

Damage to the track has been identified and will require repairs once the derailed train is cleared from the site.

While investigations and recovery works are underway, the road will remain closed with a detour in place for road users.

At this stage, one other Watco grain train has been cancelled and Queensland Rail ballast services scheduled to go through from 26 – 29 May will be postponed.

Queensland Rail will continue to keep the community informed of any updates once a recovery plan is confirmed.
