For the first time, Queensland Rail has partnered with Opera Queensland to bring world-class opera performances onboard the Spirit of the Outback train.

Queensland Rail Head of Regional Scott Cornish said in celebration of this year's Festival of Outback Opera, Spirit of the Outback customers were treated to live performances throughout their rail journey by talented Australian opera singers, transforming their travel experience into an unforgettable journey like no other.

“We are thrilled to be working with Opera Queensland to celebrate the Festival of Outback Opera which runs from 14-20 May 2024 in Longreach and Winton," Mr Cornish said.

“The Spirit of the Outback takes customers on a journey back in time to experience the history and culture of Australia as they travel into the heart of the Queensland Outback.

“This collaboration has allowed our customers to experience the power and beauty of opera aboard the unique setting of a moving train.

“This was the perfect opportunity to offer a celebration of music and storytelling, on a train that has been around for more than 30 years.

“Performances took place at Roma Street, Emerald and Longreach stations and onboard the Spirit of the Outback services during meal sittings in the Tuckerbox restaurant carriage."

Opera Queensland CEO and Artistic Director Patrick Nolan said he was delighted to collaborate and bring opera to this outback travel experience.

“To extend the festival beyond the two towns makes this such a unique experience for these guests. At Opera Queensland we aim to bring great music and song to audiences, wherever they are, so why not on trains too?

“The Festival of Outback Opera delivers a roster of some of the best singers in the country performing in remarkable locations and this journey on the Spirit of the Outback perfectly expands that offering."
