Aged Alderley bridge required to close

28/01/2020

Deterioration has forced the closure of the timber bridge over the rail line at Frederick Street in Alderley.

Queensland Rail CEO Nick Easy said the aged timber bridge, which had been restricted to pedestrian and cyclist use since 2012, would close this week.

''To ensure the ongoing safety of the local community, rail infrastructure and staff, temporary barricades have been put into place ahead of the bridge's permanent closure from 31 January and subsequent removal in April," Mr Easy said.

"For many years, we have been closely monitoring the condition of the timber bridge at Frederick Street.

"Safety is Queensland Rail's utmost priority  and we've been talking with the community over the past couple of weeks to advise them of the bridge's closure.

"The bridge was first closed to vehicles in 2012, and, despite increasingly frequent inspections and maintenance, its poor and deteriorating condition now requires its permanent closure and removal."

Mr Easy said the unexpected rate of deterioration identified prior to Christmas 2019 had left Queensland Rail engineers with no choice but to close the bridge.

"A traffic study of the area has found its use by pedestrians and cyclists to be low, and safe cross-corridor access remains available for the community at the Alderley Avenue bridge and Wilston Road level crossing," he said.

"Queensland Rail invested $800,000 in 2012 to upgrade the Alderley Avenue bridge to ensure it remained open for local road users, and this thoroughfare, which is about 450 metres away, will remain."

Mr Easy said the bridge would be removed during a schedule closure of the Ferny Grove line on 18-19 April.

Queensland Rail will engage with the local community and Brisbane City Council in the coming months on possible options to replace the bridge.
