Queensland Rail has released shocking vision of cyclists, scooter riders and pedestrians just moments away from tragedy, in a bid to reduce the number of collisions and near misses on the Queensland Rail Network.

Head of South East Queensland Scott Riedel said incidents of risky behaviour had been increasing over the last couple of years.

“In SEQ, there were 302 near misses with pedestrians in 2022, up from 269 in 2021.  Concerningly, we’ve already seen 172 so far this year (until end of May 2023). Every single one of these is avoidable if people do the right thing,” Mr Riedel said.

“In one video, a man blatantly disregards his own safety when he carries his bike across tracks between platforms at Carseldine station. The man only just scrambles onto the platform in time before his bike is hit by a train.

“This harrowing footage shows just how dangerous reckless behaviour around trains can be.”
Mr Riedel said pushing through pedestrian gates or crossing the tracks between platforms was never worth the risk.

“You can’t win a race against a train. Our trains can move at up to 160 kilometres per hour and they can’t stop quickly or swerve. It’s up to you to stay out of the way,” he said.

“Please, stay behind the yellow safety line when you’re on our platforms, obey all flashing lights if you’re a pedestrian or road user and use only designated walkways.

“Keep yourself safe and avoid a fine of up to $309. One risky act can not only end your life but will have a devastating impact on your loved ones, the driver of the train, rail staff, emergency services and any witnesses.”
