Queensland Rail operates sustainably to build and maintain a resilient rail network that benefits our customers, communities, and the environment.
Sustainable service offering
Rail is a sustainable form of transport for people and goods, delivering broad benefits to the communities we serve and the Environment. These benefits include reduced greenhouse gas emissions, greater energy efficiency, improved air quality, and decreased road congestion through safer, more efficient transport options. Every time you catch a train you are contributing to these benefits and taking steps to support sustainable transport. Please visit our environment page for more details.
We are expanding and enhancing our network and service offerings to improve reliability, asset availability, and service levels that meet customer expectations. New lines, stations and trains will meet future demand while providing more efficient and accessible travel options for all customers.
Managing our impacts
We manage our activities, including projects, to ensure we understand and effectively manage our environmental impacts to enable compliance and support sustainable outcomes. Below are some key areas of our environmental focus. For detailed information, please visit our environmental management page.
Waste management
Queensland Rail takes a proactive approach to responsible waste management. Licensed contractors dispose of all waste, with scrap metal, timber, paper, industrial waste and other materials recycled where possible. Public recycling bins are available at selected stations. Please dispose of your waste responsibly and use the allocated rubbish bins where provided.
Energy and emissions
Energy use and emissions are monitored at Queensland Rail while actively exploring ways to improve efficiency and lower emissions intensity. We also encourage innovation and the use of new technologies and practices that support our sustainability goals.
Vegetation management
Regular vegetation maintenance at Queensland Rail ensures network safety and reliability. This protects assets and ensures the safety of customers, employees, and the community. The broader value of vegetation and habitat is recognised, with existing vegetation retained and revegetation works undertaken where practical.
Weed and pest management
Queensland Rail works collaboratively with stakeholders including adjacent landholders, councils, and state government agencies to manage weeds and pests. Dedicated maintenance and monitoring programs effectively manage these environmental risks.
Noise management
We understand that community members living near railway lines can sometimes experience rail-related noise. While noise from the operation of a railway is exempt from environmental nuisance provisions, we strive to be reasonable and practical in our noise management.
