Queensland Rail has been progressing plans for a new bridge at Herbert Street, following extensive community feedback received in 2023 and 2024. We are pleased to confirm that the design is now finalised and replacement works will commence in August 2026.
To deliver a new bridge in line with community expectations, the existing temporary structure will be removed to allow construction on the same footprint, with the bridge scheduled to reopen in early 2028.
The new bridge will provide the community a cross-corridor active transport route for pedestrians, cyclists and people with mobility devices, and include a single lane for emergency vehicle access only.
The project will rely on scheduled track closures to complete construction, providing safe access to the rail corridor without disruption to rail services.
The community will be notified of works occurring outside of normal working hours (6:30AM to 6:30PM Monday to Saturday). Every effort will be made to carry out these works with respect for our valued neighbours. Works may be subject to change due to weather conditions and operational requirements.
During construction, pedestrians and cyclists can cross the rail corridor via the Thomas Street station underpass (approximately 300 metres from the bridge) or the Burnett Street bridge provides stair-free access across the corridor (approximately 400 metres from the northern side of the bridge, and approximately 700 metres from the southern side).
Queensland Rail will also support locals requiring an accessible option through a taxi service. More information on this service will be made available once the bridge closes. Map data: Google 2026
