Muriel Avenue bridge collision protection beam

Muriel Avenue, Moorooka - Rail bridge collision

Queensland Rail is constructing a protection beam to effectively eliminate the risk of over-height vehicles colliding with the Muriel Avenue rail bridge.

Collisions with low clearance bridges are extremely dangerous and can cause costly damage to critical rail infrastructure and frustrating delays for road users and rail customers. In 2019-2020, Queensland Rail and its customers were impacted by 68 incidents of vehicles colliding with low-clearance rail bridges in South East Queensland. Nine of these occurred at Muriel Avenue despite considerable fluorescent warning signs and protection beams being fixed to the bridge.

A new stand-alone protection beam, specially designed to withstand significant vehicle impact, will be constructed across Muriel Avenue approximately 44 metres east of the rail bridge.

Construction will be complete by end-2020 (weather and site conditions permitting).
