Central station upgrade

Upgrade works to make the facilities at Central station more reliable for our customers are underway.

Works completed previously include the refurbishment of back-of-house facilities with new offices, first aid and customer communication area. Other improvements have been made such as new lighting, fans, cladding, painting and replacing roof sheeting above the outer concourse.

The next phase of work will involve replacing the station lifts that service platforms 1/2 and 3/4.

Lift replacement works are expected to continue with the replacement of the lift on platform 5/6 and the outer concourse lift to Ann Street and Anzac Square Arcade.

Queensland Rail will ensure customers are kept informed of further elements of the upgrade as they are planned to occur.

Works in progress

On 30 November 2020, the lifts to platforms 1/2 and 3/4 at Central station were temporarily closed for major upgrades. The lifts will be unavailable for approximately four months.

We are carrying out these works on platforms 1-4 at the same time to ensure the lifts are back in operation as quickly as possible.

During the temporary lift closures, only stairs and escalators are available to access platforms 1/2 and 3/4.

These platforms service the Cleveland, Beenleigh, Gold Coast, Shorncliffe, Airport, Ferny Grove and Doomben lines.

If you are travelling to Central on these lines and need to use a lift, you should disembark at Roma Street or Fortitude Valley. Staff at these stations will help you get to the correct platform to arrive at Central station on platforms 5 or 6.

If you are departing from Central and need to use a lift, you can board a train in your direction of travel from platforms 5 or 6 and transfer to the correct line at Roma Street or Fortitude Valley. Staff at these stations will help you get to the correct platform to continue your journey.

Alternative arrangements will be made for customers travelling to or from Central station when the platform 5/6 lift is not available.

Please allow additional time when travelling to or from an alternative station during the temporary lift closures.

Queensland Rail will work closely with our valued tenants and stakeholders in the Central station precinct, to ensure project impacts are managed effectively. Work will occur mainly at night and over some weekends to reduce the impact to customers.
