Safety and security

At Queensland Rail, Safety Comes First. Always. Your safety and security are our top priorities, so please take a look at our safety commitment to see how we Act Safely. We have outlined our approach to various safety and security issues and what you can do to be Railsmart.

Safety

Travel with care

Slips, trips, and falls are the most common cause of customer injuries on the Queensland Rail network. We ask that you please Travel with Care.

Anti-social behaviour

We do not tolerate any form of undesirable behaviour such as violence and aggression. Help ensure a safe journey for all our customers by following our train etiquette guidelines.

Trespassing on Queensland Rail property

Trespassing on Queensland Rail property is illegal and poses significant risks. Please respect all safety barriers and signage.

Graffiti and vandalism of Queensland Rail property

Wilful damage to property, including graffiti and vandalism, is not only unlawful but also affects the safety and experience of all passengers. If you see someone engaging in graffiti and/or vandalism on Queensland Rail property, please report it to our staff or Crime Stoppers.

Vehicle damage/theft

We recommend securing your vehicle when parking at our stations. If you experience any damage or theft, report it to our staff and local authorities as soon as possible.

Rail bridge safety

There are many rail bridges with clearance below 5.4m in Brisbane and around South East Queensland. In 2024 there was a total of 398 strikes to Queensland Rail infrastructure. We ask truck drivers to please plan your route carefully to support Rail Bridge Safety.

Level crossing safety

Always approach level crossings with caution. Be aware of the signals and stay out of the rail corridor when the warning lights are flashing, or barriers are down. Your vigilance is crucial for your safety and the safety of others.

Objects on tracks

If you notice any objects on the tracks that could pose a risk, do not attempt to remove them yourself. Report the situation to our staff or emergency services right away. Your prompt action can help prevent accidents.

Security

Security team

To provide security for our customers, we partner with the Queensland Police Services Railway Squad who are specifically trained to work in the rail environment. Additionally, our Authorised Offices are at our stations and onboard our trains to assist you and ensure your safety.

Station core zones

As a part of our security initiatives, Queensland Rail provides station core zones marked with blue and white diagonal stripes at our SEQ stations outside the CBD. These areas are monitored by our Security Monitoring Team via CCTV for added safety.

Station emergency phones

Emergency phones are situated in the core zones on most station platforms. Activating the emergency phone will put the caller in direct contact with the Security Monitoring Team who can also view the caller through CCTV.

Train emergency help points

Multiple emergency help points are available on all South East Queensland services. Emergency help points are located near the doorways in every carriage and throughout the carriage in some newer trains. Activating the emergency phone will put the caller in direct contact with our traincrew who can respond appropriately.

Reporting and support

Report or witness an incident or injury

If you witness or experience an incident or injury, please report it to our staff and local authorities as soon as possible. Our staff are trained to respond quickly and effectively.

For emergencies, call 000.
